Ammonia (NH₃)

Ammonia produced from natural gas reforming via the Haber-Bosch process. It is the base raw material for all other nitrogen fertilizers. It is the most carbon-intensive fertilizer process.

N₂O (Nitrous Oxide) Emission Calculation

N₂O emissions from nitric acid production are calculated automatically. They are converted to CO₂ equivalent using the GWP 273 value. This is the most critical emission item in the fertilizer sector.

Fixed 1% Mark-up Penalty (Fertilizer Exemption)

For the fertilizer sector only a 1% mark-up is applied in all years (10-30% in other sectors). This exemption is applied automatically in the system.

Natural Gas Reforming (SMR) Tracking

For natural gas reforming, the basis of ammonia production, fuel consumption and process emissions are tracked in detail. A distinction between grey ammonia and blue ammonia is possible.

CO₂ Recovery Systems

The use of CO₂ from the ammonia process in urea production (recovery) is tracked. In-sector CO₂ use is taken into account in the emission calculation.

CN codes 3102 (mineral nitrogen fertilizers), 3105 (mineral compound fertilizers), 2814 (ammonia), 2808 (nitric acid) are defined in the system.

Fertilizer CBAM Questions

Why is the mark-up penalty a fixed 1% in the fertilizer sector?
Fertilizers have a special exemption in the EU CBAM regulation. While the mark-up penalty rises to +10% in 2026, +20% in 2027 and +30% in 2028 and beyond in other sectors, a fixed 1% is applied for all years for fertilizers. Carbonaz applies this exemption automatically.
How is N₂O emission calculated for fertilizers?
The N₂O (nitrous oxide) released during nitric acid production is calculated as a separate item. With its high global warming potential (GWP 273) it is converted to CO₂ equivalent and added to total emissions.
Is Scope 2 electricity emission included in the CBAM calculation for fertilizers?
Yes. Fertilizers are outside Annex II; therefore indirect (Scope 2) electricity emission is included in the CBAM certificate calculation. The sector rule is applied automatically in the system.
Are there different benchmarks for ammonia and nitric acid?
Yes. Separate CBAM 2026 benchmark values for ammonia and nitric acid are defined in the system. Urea and NPK compound fertilizers are derived from the emission profiles of these base products.
Which fertilizer CN codes are supported?
CN code series 3102 (nitrogen fertilizers) and 3105 (compound fertilizers) are defined in the system and match automatically when adding a product.
