Hydrogen Sector

For the Hydrogen Sector CBAM Solution

Carbonaz supports all colors of hydrogen production. There is separate calculation logic for grey (SMR), blue (SMR + CCUS), green (renewable electrolysis) and other production methods. Renewable energy guarantee certificates can be uploaded to the system, and CN code 2804.10.00 is supported.

Hydrogen Production Methods

All Colors of Hydrogen

Separate calculation logic and a separate emission profile for grey, blue, green and other production methods.

Grey Hydrogen (SMR)

Production from natural gas via the Steam Methane Reforming method. Today it makes up 95% of world hydrogen production. It has the highest carbon footprint.

Natural gasSMR processCO₂ by-productConventional

Blue Hydrogen (SMR + CCUS)

Combining grey hydrogen production with carbon capture systems. The CO₂ capture rate can reach 85-95%, and permanent storage is required.

SMRCCUSCarbon captureTransition technology

Green Hydrogen (Electrolysis)

Production by water electrolysis from renewable electricity. Alkaline, PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) or SOEC (Solid Oxide) electrolyzer types. A zero-carbon promise.

AlkalinePEMSOECRenewable

Yellow and Pink Hydrogen

Electrolysis production with grid electricity (yellow) or nuclear electricity (pink). The carbon footprint depends on the grid mix. For Türkiye, the grid emission factor is taken into account.

Sector-Specific Capabilities

Designed from Scratch for Hydrogen

Separate Calculation for SMR and Electrolysis Methods

Completely different emission calculation logic for grey hydrogen produced from natural gas reforming and green hydrogen produced by electrolysis. Hybrid production is also supported.

Green Hydrogen Scope 2 Exemption

For green hydrogen produced entirely from renewable electricity, Scope 2 emissions are recorded as zero. It requires a renewable source guarantee certificate.

Blue Hydrogen Carbon Capture Integration

The amount of CO₂ captured with carbon capture systems is entered into the system. The capture rate, storage location and permanence are verified. Net emission is calculated.

Natural Gas Feedstock Calculation

In the SMR process, natural gas is used both as fuel and as feedstock. The system tracks both uses separately and applies the correct emission factors.

Electrolyzer Type Selection (Alkaline / PEM / SOEC)

Separate efficiency parameters for Alkaline (common, cheap), PEM (high purity) and SOEC (high efficiency) electrolyzer types. Electricity consumption (kWh/kg H₂) is tracked.

Renewable Energy Guarantee Certificate

Renewable electricity purchase agreements and Türkiye renewable energy guarantee certificates can be uploaded to the system. The green hydrogen claim is documented.

CN Code 2804.10.00 Support

CN code 2804.10.00 for pure hydrogen is defined in the system. The relevant CN codes for hydrogen carriers (ammonia, methanol) are also supported.

Hourly Renewable Matching

The EU regulation requires hourly renewable electricity matching for green hydrogen. The system can track hourly production and consumption data.

Multi-Tier Supply Chain

Collect data at unlimited depth from your suppliers of natural gas, renewable electricity, demineralized water and catalysts.

Accurate Annual Mark-up Penalty Rate

+10% in 2026, +20% in 2027, +30% in 2028 and beyond are correctly coded. A future cost projection is made with year-based simulation.

Full CBAM Factor Transition 2026 → 2034

The 0.025 → 1.000 transition schedule is recorded in the system. The green transformation projection is critical for the hydrogen sector.

Native-Language Interface and Support

Your team works in their own language. The interface, terms, documentation and support are available in multiple languages.

CBAM Factor Phase-In Schedule

From 2026 to 2034: Cost Projection

The CBAM factor rises year over year, reaching a full 100% in 2034. Carbonaz supports every transition year and shows your future cost today with the mark-up simulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrogen CBAM Questions

How does the calculation differ for grey, blue and green hydrogen?
Separate calculation logic is applied according to the production method. Grey hydrogen (SMR) is based on the emission of natural gas reforming, blue hydrogen (SMR + CCUS) on the carbon capture deduction, and green hydrogen (electrolysis) on the renewable electricity profile.
How is the Scope 2 exemption applied for green hydrogen?
The Scope 2 exemption is applied for green hydrogen produced with renewable electricity. When renewable energy guarantee certificates are uploaded to the system and verified, the indirect emission profile is calculated accordingly.
How is carbon capture (CCUS) reflected in the calculation for blue hydrogen?
The amount of CO₂ captured and stored in blue hydrogen production is deducted directly from the emission. Carbonaz treats carbon capture integration as a separate item.
Does the electrolysis type (Alkaline, PEM, SOEC) affect the calculation?
The electrolysis type can be selected and the energy consumption profile is evaluated accordingly. With hourly renewable matching, your green hydrogen claim is reported in a verifiable way.
Which CN code and benchmark are used for hydrogen?
CN code 2804.10.00 (hydrogen) is defined in the system. A reference benchmark of 5.089 tCO₂/ton is applied for the SMR method.
